Frank Hayward
Frank Harold Hayward was born in Romeo and worked in Mt. Clemens and Detroit. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago before leaving for Paris, where he studied under Whistler, Benjamin-Constant and Jean Paul Laurens. Hayward participated in several prominent exhibitions, including the Paris Salon in 1900, the Royal Academy of England in 1901, and the New York Pan-American Exposition in 1901. He founded and served as the president of the Hayward Academy of Fine Arts in Detroit. Though his contribution to the Capitol’s collection is a charcoal portrait of Governor Luce, Hayward was best known for painting in oil. Outside of portraits, he also completed history paintings and landscapes.
