John Bagley

John J. Bagley served as governor of Michigan from 1873 to 1877. He was a Detroit businessman prior to entering politics, establishing himself in the tobacco industry before moving into insurance and banking. Bagley helped found the Republican party. As governor, he formed a state commission to regulate railroads, created the state Board of Health, and addressed juvenile delinquency by enhancing educational facilities. A Unitarian who supported prohibition, Bagley also strengthened liquor laws. While in office, he oversaw construction on the current State Capitol.
