BiographyJoseph Oriel Eaton was known primarily as a portrait artist and specialized in children’s portraits in his late career, though he also painted landscapes and classical scenes. He was born in Newark, OH, and studied in New York. He later settled in Cincinnati, OH, earning a reputation as one of the city’s finest painters. Eaton was a member of the National Academy and the Society of Painters in Watercolors. Later in life he returned to New York, dying in Yonkers. His son, of the same name, founded Eaton Corporation.
