BiographyNelson Shanks was born in Rochester, New York and later lived in New Hope, Pennsylvania. He was a realist painter, and his work includes portraiture, landscapes, interiors and still lives. He became internationally known, painting recognizable figures like Pope John Paul II, Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Luciano Pavarotti, President Reagan, and President Clinton. He later opened an art school in Philadelphia, where he taught realism in the French and Italian styles.
