BiographyGari (Julius Garibaldi) Melchers was born in Detroit and began studying under his father, artist Julius Theodore Melchers. He then moved abroad, studying at the Royal Academy of Art in Dusseldorf, Germany before heading to Paris to attend both the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Académie Julian. Melchers set up a studio in Egmonds, Holland in 1884, where he gained fame painting scenes of Dutch realism. Melchers shifted his artistic style repeatedly over the course of his career, adapting to popular trends in the art world. Melchers completed murals at the Detroit Public Library, and some of his work is held in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Arts.
