Percy Ives

BiographyPercy Ives was born in Detroit and is the son of artist Lewis T. Ives. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and in Detroit before moving to Paris, where he trained at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Ives became a well-known portraitist, painting several presidents, governors, legislators, and other prominent public figures. He was appointed dean of the Detroit Museum of Art School in 1890 and designed the official seal of the Detroit Institute of Arts. He helped found the Hopkin Club and was a member of numerous other clubs and societies, including the Scarab Club, Detroit Watercolor Society, and Art Club. His work was displayed at the Paris Salon in 1893, the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in New York. Museums that have shown his work include the Detroit Museum of Art, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Cincinnati Fine Arts Museum.
