Thomas McCleland

BiographyThomas McCleland was born in New York and later relocated to Detroit. A “self-instructed” artist according to a short feature in the New York Evening Post, very little biographical information exists on McClelland. He is recorded in Capitol history via Michigan’s Territorial Laws, which records an 1832 appropriation from the library fund to McClelland for a full-length portrait of Lewis Cass.
